After the successful release of RoboCop: Rogue City and the warm reception from players, creating a follow-up was only a matter of time. I had the privilege once again to lead my team on RoboCop: Rogue City – Unfinished Business – a good old-fashioned standalone expansion. It’s a complete narrative experience that you can enjoy without owning or even having played the original game.
Thanks to the production pipeline we refined during the main game, we were able to build an enormous new world for this expansion. By smartly reusing assets and applying efficient workflows, we crafted a wealth of epic environments that guide players through the Megablock – a colossal vertical city. From the struggling lower levels, where the poorest residents fight to survive, all the way up to the dangerous upper zones dominated by mercenaries, the journey is both diverse and visually striking.
The Megablock concept opened endless opportunities to explore gritty, concrete-heavy sci-fi environments. The team had the freedom to unleash their creativity, designing intricate corridors, grand halls, and unique set pieces – a welcome chance to experiment after months of building grounded, realistic worlds for the base game.
My role extended beyond leading environment art. I was responsible for the lighting, mood, and overall atmosphere of the Megablock, ensuring each level felt distinct. As a lighting artist, my challenge was to make raw concrete interiors engaging and visually rich. The result is a vibrant yet heavy atmosphere that supports the tone of the game.
I also oversaw VFX, handled optimization, and resolved both technical and artistic challenges. Additionally, I worked on cinematic lighting from the very beginning, which allowed me to integrate cutscene lighting seamlessly into the environments without heavy faking.
This project was a lot of fun and a tremendous learning experience. I’m grateful to have worked alongside such talented and eager artists – whatever I envisioned, they brought to life exactly as imagined.
Kudos to the environment team.
